Test Pressing Sign-Off: What to Check Before Approving Your Vinyl Run
Updated September 2026 · 9 min readBefore a plant runs your full order, they press a handful of copies from the finished stampers and send them to you: the test pressing (TP). This is the checkpoint that exists specifically so a defect gets caught on a handful of discs instead of on your whole run. It only works if you actually check the record properly before you approve it, and know what "approving" commits you to.
If you've never done this before, here's what a test pressing actually is, what to check, and the one mistake that undoes the whole safety net.
What a test pressing is, and why it exists
Once your master is cut into a lacquer and plated into metal stampers, the plant runs a small batch straight from those stampers before committing to the full order. This is your last chance to catch a problem: a mastering issue that only shows up on vinyl, a pressing fault, a labelling error, damage from the plating process. Everything after this point is locked in at the scale of your full run.
How many copies you get is set by your quote, not by a general rule. It is usually a small number, often around three to five. If your quote doesn't state it, ask before you confirm the order, because the count affects what you can do with them: one copy tells you what happened to that disc, several copies let you tell a one-off from a fault in the stampers.
The plant sends copies to you and usually keeps a reference copy of their own. Once you sign off, they press the rest from the same stampers, so whatever is on the test pressing is what you're getting, multiplied by however many copies you ordered.
Before you press play
Half the faults people report to plants turn out to be their own playback chain. Five minutes of setup separates a real pressing defect from a problem you brought to it yourself.
- Clean the disc first. A new pressing carries release agent from the mould and paper dust from the inner sleeve. Both make noise that has nothing to do with the pressing quality.
- Check your stylus. A worn or dirty stylus distorts the inner grooves of every record you own. If yours has a few hundred hours on it, borrow a system rather than filing a complaint.
- Set tracking force to the figure the cartridge maker specifies. Too light and the stylus bounces in the groove instead of tracking it. That sounds like distortion or a repeating fault, and it physically damages the copy you may later need as your reference. Too heavy tracks cleanly but wears the record faster. Set anti-skate to match, since getting it wrong distorts one channel and reads as a problem with one side of the mix.
- Have your master ready to compare, level-matched. Vinyl is usually cut a little quieter than a digital master. If you A/B at different volumes, the louder one wins every time and you learn nothing.
- Play the whole thing on a proper turntable. Both sides, start to finish, no skipping. A laptop speaker or a suitcase player will hide most of what you are looking for.
Where problems show up on the disc
Faults aren't scattered randomly across a record. Each zone has its own failure mode, and knowing which is which tells you whether you are hearing a pressing defect, a cutting decision, or normal vinyl behaviour.
- 1Lead-in grooveThe silent run before the music. Noise here is surface contamination or a plating fault, with nothing to mask it.
- 2Outer tracksHighest linear speed, best fidelity on the disc. If something sounds wrong here, it is rarely a groove-geometry problem.
- 3Inner tracksSpeed drops as the needle moves inward. Sibilance and harshness appear here first, and this is where a side that runs long shows its cost.
- 4Run-out and dead waxWhere the needle lifts or locks, and where your etching lives. Check the mark is present, legible and correct.
- 5Spindle hole and labelAn off-centre hole makes the pitch wobble on a perfectly flat disc: watch the tonearm, not the label. If the test pressing came with printed labels, check side and artwork too.
What you might hear, and what it means

One copy, or all of them
This is the most useful thing you can do with a test pressing, and the reason the count matters. Play the same passage on every copy you were sent.
Something that happened to that individual disc: handling, packing, a one-off in the cycle. Annoying, but it says nothing about the run that follows.
Points to the metalwork rather than to one disc: the stamper, or the cut behind it. It is likely to repeat across the run in exactly that place. This is the finding that justifies rejecting and asking the plant to investigate; which part failed, and whether the fix is new metalwork or a new cut, is for the plant to establish and agree with you.
If you only received two or three copies and something is borderline, say so and ask for another. A plant that has to press a few more discs is a far cheaper outcome than a full run nobody wants to sell.
One limit worth knowing before you start. A test pressing is an audio check. Plants usually run them on plain or generic labels rather than your final print, and they are normally pressed in black even when your run is not, so a test pressing tells you nothing about how a colour, splatter or marble variant will actually look. Printed parts and colour samples are approved separately. Ask the plant what it provides for your configuration, and when.
What to check visually
- Spindle hole. Drop it on the platter and watch the tonearm rather than the label: a hole punched off the groove centre pushes the arm sideways once per revolution, and that is the same fault you hear as pitch wobble. A label that orbits on its own is a separate thing: it can sit slightly off centre relative to the grooves, and on a disc that plays without wobble that is cosmetic, not a centring fault.
- Labels, if printed. Correct side (A on side A), no smudging or misprint. Most test pressings arrive on plain or generic labels, and then the printed label is a separate proof, approved on its own.
- Surface condition. Hold the disc at an angle under a light and look across the surface for visible marks, scuffs or non-fill (small pits where the vinyl didn't fully take the groove pattern). Non-fill you can see is usually non-fill you can hear.
- Flatness. Set it on a flat surface and check it isn't visibly warped or domed.
- Dead wax. If you asked for a studio mark or a custom line etched in the run-out, this is where you confirm it's actually there, legible, and correct, not something to discover after the full run ships.
The mistake that undoes the whole safety net
The test pressing only protects you if your approval is explicit and in writing. The common failure mode isn't a bad-sounding test pressing. It's silence. A client listens, doesn't hear anything obviously wrong, doesn't say anything, and at some plants the terms treat silence as approval after a set period, so the full run proceeds without you ever actually having said yes.
Always send a clear written approval, an email or message that says explicitly "approved, please proceed", before the full run starts. If something's off, say so specifically and ask for a new test pressing rather than hoping it corrects itself in the full run. It won't, because the full run is pressed from the exact same stampers.
The opposite failure is quieter and costs time rather than quality. Test pressings arrive, and then sit for a fortnight while three people each want to hear them on their own system. Nobody at the plant is working on your record during those two weeks, and they come straight out of whatever buffer you had before the release date. - Both sides played end to end, on a cleaned disc, with a stylus you trust.
- Every copy checked at the same few passages, to separate a one-off from a stamper fault.
- Last track of each side listened to closely, since inner-groove problems hide there.
- Compared against your master at matched level, not from memory.
- Labels, spindle hole, flatness and dead wax checked by eye.
- Anything questionable raised with the plant in writing, with side and timecode, before approving rather than after.
- Claim windows for the delivered run confirmed in writing, since approving the test pressing does not cover what arrives later.
What happens after you sign off
Once you approve, the plant proceeds to press your full order from the same stampers used for the test pressing. This is usually also the point where the balance of payment becomes due, since the non-refundable setup work (lacquer, plating) is already done and the only remaining cost is the actual pressing run. Keep your test pressing copies. If a problem does turn up in the finished batch, having the approved reference to compare against is what makes a claim to the plant straightforward instead of a dispute over whose word to take.
Approval also does not close every door. It settles faults that were audible on the record you approved. Printing errors, short delivery, transit damage and problems that only appear across a full run are separate matters, and each has its own deadline, often measured in days from delivery rather than from when you get around to opening the boxes. Ask the plant to state those windows in writing before you approve, not after something arrives wrong.
