12", 10" or 7": Which Vinyl Format Fits Your Release
Updated September 2026 · 7 min readFormat feels like an obvious choice until you're actually placing the order — 12" is the default most people reach for, but it isn't automatically the right one. Run length, how the record gets played, and the economics all pull in slightly different directions depending on what you're releasing. Here's how to actually decide.
Match the format to the release, not the other way round
- 7" — one or two tracks. Built for a single, or a two-track release with one cut per side. Feels intentional at this length; a single stretched across a 12" can end up with a lot of unused runout and a wider, quieter groove than it needs.
- 10" — the in-between. Comfortably fits an EP (roughly 3–4 tracks total, depending on length) without the extra real estate of a 12". Less common, which cuts both ways: it stands out visually in a crate, but pressing and packaging options are sometimes more limited than for 12" or 7".
- 12" — EP to full album. The default for anything from a proper EP up to a full-length, and for DJ-facing 12"s regardless of track count, because of maximum groove width and volume (see below).
Format and how loud a record can be cut
This is the part that actually matters for club-facing music, more than track count does. A 12" spinning at 33⅓ RPM with generous groove spacing can be cut significantly louder and with more low-end headroom than the same audio squeezed onto a 7" — which is why 12" remains the default for DJ tools and club-oriented releases even when the material is short enough to fit on a smaller format. If the record needs to hold up on a club system, format isn't just aesthetic — it affects how much level the cutting engineer can put on the lacquer before the groove starts to distort.
The relationship isn't fixed — RPM and side length both trade off against level too, a 12" at 45 RPM with a short side allows more headroom than the same 12" at 33⅓ with a long side. But as a rule of thumb: if maximum loudness matters more than anything else, favour the larger format and the shorter side length.
The reason behind all of this is one piece of geometry. The disc turns at a constant speed, but the groove gets shorter as it spirals inward, so it passes under the stylus roughly two and a half times slower at the label than at the outer edge. Less physical distance for the same audio means high frequencies are harder to trace cleanly, which is why the end of a long side sounds duller and harsher than the start. This is inner groove distortion, and every format decision on this page is really a decision about how far into that difficult radius your music ends up.
That gives you four levers, and all four are set in the specification before anyone quotes:
- Shorter sides. The most direct one. An 18-minute side finishes well clear of the worst radius; a 25-minute side ends up in the middle of it.
- More discs. A 50-minute album on one LP is two sides of 25. The same album as a double is four sides of 12 or 13, each one finishing early. It costs more to make and it is often the right call anyway.
- 45 RPM instead of 33⅓. Higher groove speed across the whole disc, inner radius included. It costs you running time: about 12 minutes a side rather than 18, and a hard ceiling near 15 where 33⅓ allows 22 to 25.
- Larger format. On a 7" the entire programme sits at a radius that would count as inner groove on a 12", which is why the format is least forgiving of bright, dense material.
Put in one table, here is roughly where the comfortable range ends and the practical ceiling sits, for each format and speed:

Typical ranges across EU plants, not a specification — the exact ceiling depends on the material and the cutting engineer at the plant we recommend for your release. At 33⅓ RPM a 7" is rarely the better choice over 45 RPM if the running time allows it — see the note above.
What each format typically costs, per copy
Based on current EU quotes gathered in 2026, for a run of 300 copies, black vinyl, standard packaging:
- 7": roughly €5.5–6 per copy, all-in — often the cheapest of the three at this quantity, since less material and a smaller sleeve are used.
- 12": roughly €5.5–6 per copy, all-in — close to 7" at 300 copies, sometimes marginally above it depending on the plant.
- 10": roughly €6–6.5 per copy, all-in — frequently the most expensive of the three per copy, despite being physically smaller than a 12". Less standardised tooling and lower order volumes across the market both push the price up.
That last point catches people off guard: 10" isn't a cheaper, scaled-down 12" — it's often the pricier option precisely because it's the least common format. If cost per copy is the deciding factor and the material fits, 7" or 12" usually beats 10" at the same run size. It's also worth confirming upfront whether a plant even offers your format at all: not every EU vinyl pressing plant does 10" or 7" — small-format capability sits with a narrower set of plants than 12", so a custom 7 inch vinyl pressing or a small 10" EP run may need a different plant than the one quoting your best 12" price. Get actual 7 inch vinyl pressing prices from a plant that specialises in the format rather than assuming your 12" supplier can simply scale down.
Weight: 140g or 180g — a separate decision from format
This one comes up in almost every project brief, but the numbers themselves are really a 12" convention. 140g and 180g describe a disc thickness that was standardised around the 12" LP — and weight scales with surface area at a given thickness, not just the label on the sticker. Press that same thickness onto a 7" blank, at roughly a third the surface of a 12", and the actual weight comes out well under 100g, not 180g. Plants and labels still say "heavyweight" for a thicker 7" or 10" pressing, but the gram figure quoted for a 12" doesn't carry over directly — if a plant gives you an exact weight for a smaller format, that's the number to go by, not the 140/180 split.
Here's the honest answer, from decades of watching this exact debate play out on the pressing floor: weight doesn't change how a record sounds. Same stamper, same groove depth, same decisions the cutting engineer made — a 180g pressing and a 140g pressing off the same master are sonically identical. What 180g actually buys you is mass: better resistance to warping on a hot windowsill or in transit, and a record that feels reassuringly solid when someone pulls it out of the sleeve. That's a real benefit. It's just not an audio one, whatever the sticker on the shrink-wrap implies.
What it costs is real too. More vinyl compound per copy means a small but genuine bump in the per-unit price — typically a modest amount per copy at the run sizes we work with, though the exact delta is plant-specific. It can also add a touch to lead time, since heavier pucks take marginally longer to press and cool. And this is the part that catches people out: not every plant even offers a genuine heavyweight pressing below 12" — the plant quoting your best 140g 12" price isn't automatically the one to ask about a heavier 7" or 10".
Our house view: unless there's a specific reason to want the heavier feel — a flagship release, an audiophile-facing repress, something meant to sit substantially on a shelf — 140g is the sensible default for a short run. Put whatever the extra weight would have cost into something that actually changes the sound: a proper master, or a lead time that isn't rushed.
